Gale Sayers Career Accomplishments:
Gale Sayers was a phenomenon. True to his nickname, the Kansas Comet, earned during a stellar college career with the Jayhawks, he burst like a meteor upon the NFL scene in 1965. As a rookie with the Chicago Bears he scored a then-record 22 touchdowns, including a record-tying six TDs in one game against the San Francisco 49ers. Along with his fellow Chicago rookie, Dick Butkus, Sayers gave Bears fans thrilling young talent to cheer about on both sides of the ball. His flashing, galloping running style and uncanny ability to elude tacklers etched an indelible mark on the memories of anyone who watched him play. Like a comet, Sayer's career went by too quickly, but his legend as one of the NFL's greatest runners endures. Gale Sayers was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977.
